Improve Gut Health with Prebiotic Foods

Improve Gut Health with Prebiotic Foods

At Genki World, we take important health discoveries and put them into practice.

Your gut is a microbiome that is home to thousands of species of bacteria and microorganisms. These microbes called gut flora are important because they can influence your immune system, body weight and mood. Studies show that the more diverse and richer your community of gut flora, the lower your risk of disease. Eating prebiotic foods such as high fiber veggies that contain inulin have been proven to boost gut flora. Some veggies that contain high levels of inulin are onions, leeks, artichokes and garlic.

We invite you to learn more about your gut microbiome by reading the research, and by sharing it with a friend through sending a Genki World card.

Our Experience:

At Genki World, we wanted to find out your favorite prebiotic high fiber veggie, so we conducted a twitter poll from September 19th to September 25th and discovered that onions were the overall favorite.

We were curious to know more, so we challenged everyone at the Genki office to share how they enjoy eating onions. Here are some of their dishes and even a recipe to help inspire you to eat more onions.

ChirashiChirashi, aka sushi bowl, is simply sushi rice with stuff on top. A bit of tamagoyaki (egg), maguro (bluefin tuna), sake (salmon), ikura (salmon roe), kaiware (radish sprouts) and negi (chopped green onions)

Stir fryThis is an everything but the kitchen sink stir fry. I love to make this dish when I need to use up some ingredients in my fridge, or am rushing to quickly get a weeknight meal on the dinner table. My stir fry has turkey bacon, Italian sausage, multi-colored bell peppers, broccolini, mushrooms, shrimp, and sweet onions.

Oxtail PhoThis oxtail pho was made using three types of onions. Sweet onions were cut in half and charred on the stove then put into the instant pot along with other ingredients. Before eating, the sweet onions were removed from the broth and chopped green onions and yellow onions were added for garnish.

Veggie burger with sautéed or caramelized onionsI love adding sautéed or caramelized onions to my dishes like this veggie burger.

Chicken tofu Chicken tofu for my soul is one my favorite dishes to make when I want to eat something that’s just comforting. I used chicken thighs, tofu, yellow onions, and chopped green onions for garnish.

Turkey chili topped with shredded cheese, sour cream, and minced red onionFor me, chili is not the same without some minced onions on the top. This is a turkey chili topped with shredded cheese, sour cream and minced red onion.

Omlette with fresh spinach, avocado, and onionsOn the weekend, my go-to breakfast is an omelette with fresh spinach, avocado and onions. It’s healthy but very satisfying.

Cold ramen with green onionsNoodly Noms. Cold ramen pumped up with lots of gut flora boosting green onions.

Tortilla chips with chili, cheese, avocado, chopped tomatoes, and onionsGame day loaded nachos! Crunchy tortilla chips smothered with all the fixins: chili, cheese, avocado, and chopped tomatoes and onions.

Salmon and natto poke wrapsSalmon and natto poke wraps. Okay, I get it’s not for everyone. But I love it and, bonus, it’s pretty darn healthy! Wrap it in nori – salmon & sweet onion poke, natto garnished with green onions, radish sprouts, ikura (salmon roe)

We hope these onion dishes have inspired you to add onions to your next meal. If you’re still debating your next dish, here’s a classic onion rings recipe that you’re sure to love. Hope you give it a try and enjoy!
